How is life coaching different than therapy?

There are many different answers to this question, but the way I usually put it is that life coaching focuses on creating action and movement and therapy is more about processing and figuring out.  That is not to say that there is not processing in life coaching or movement in therapy.  There is processing in coaching, but it is more about processing to get movement in your life and less about processing to get an answer.

For example, if someone has a negative body image, a therapist might work with a patient to figure out where that negativity comes from, how it has manifested in the past and how lousy it feels in the present.  As a coach, I would ask you how your body imagine is holding you back from getting what you want in life.  We would then work find ways for you to get what you want in life despite your body image.  We might work in improving that image, but only if that is truly important to what your greater goal is.

How long do clients typically work with you?

I’m not sure there is a “typical,” since everyone is so different.  It largely depends on what you want to focus on and where you want to be when you’re done.  I have worked with clients for three months and they have made significant progress and felt ready to go it alone.  I have one client who has been working with me for over two years.  We meet less frequently now, but she likes having someone to run things by and get perspective.

I check in with clients every two or three months to find out how our work is going and if they still feel it is beneficial.

How much homework will you give me?

There is no set amount of homework.  We will figure it out together.  There is no point in giving you lots of assignments if you don’t have the time or energy to do them.  You will tell me what you want to take on and I may challenge you to take on more, but ultimately it’s your choice and responsibility.

Will you give me advice on what to do?

No!  I will guide you to find your own answers because they are all in you.  We may brainstorm options together and I might ask what it would be like to consider a different alternative, but I will not tell you what to do.

What if I have to cancel an appointment?

I know that things come up and appointments get canceled.  If I get 24 hours notice, we can reschedule or credit you for that session.  On the rare occasion that you need to cancel at the last minute or your simply miss our meeting, I will make every effort to reschedule with you.  If a client misses more than three appointments, I will no longer offer to reschedule.

What if I prefer to meet in person?

I prefer to do half hour sessions.  Is that okay with you?
